The clock on the mantel is ticking.
Neville’s thumbs chase each other around in restless circles.
“Will you stop that?” Gran snaps, glancing up from her knitting. “Why don’t you sweep the foyer?”
He already has, but goes to do it again. He doesn’t think anyone is coming. It’s five after five.
The bell rings at five seven. Neville flings open the door.
It’s Cho, holding a box wrapped in rice paper.
“I didn’t know what to get you,” she begins apologetically, blushing as she hands him the gift. “I’m sorry I’m late.”
Neville grins shyly. “You’re just in time.”
