Enhanced genetics and an assassin’s upbringing could only take him so far. The boy had once toughed out his nights with a bare two hours of sleep, but the onset of puberty overpowered all special training and engineered abilities. Fewer than four hours of rest now left him dazed, Robin’s kicks and punches weaving sloppy arcs in the night. He came to accept his body’s demands with an almost ritual sense of resignation. Dick was unsurprised. Damian was belligerent to the core, yes, but Dick noted with sadness that the boy was always in that situation of having to yield.
He still prickles at blatant affection, but when he comes to catnap, he perches himself atop the plush backrest of Dick’s chair; doesn’t matter how many other vacant and equally comfortable surfaces abound. When the boy’s breaths have slowed, his chest swelling to the rhythm of his sleep, Dick feels his love cutting him inside, deep and unwavering, the way a hunter drives his blade. He chances a touch, just barely grasping those fingers-they are so tiny beneath the gauntlets-and whispers, at a volume between premonition and prayer, all the things in this world that he wants for this boy.
