A man once spoke of selfishness, saying that he despised those who thought only of themselves, never thinking of others. This man saw selfish people every which way he turned, always asking for favors, ever demanding. He bestowed said favors on those that requested them; after all HE was not self centered like the rest. This man let people know in no uncertain terms that they were placing a burden on him. He wondered why no one volunteered help to him when he needed it. He was always there for others so why should he even have to request help? Over time, he wondered why no one wished his help and why those with whom he kept company dwindled to none. He resented them for abandoning him as he had always resented them and his heart was found to have hardened to stone when he passed on at a relatively young age.
