What has happened so far: Since Ruki's boyfriend Tatsuro has died a month ago, he didn't even notice things passing by. Life has lost its meaning for him, but now is valentine's day and he wants to give Tatsuro, who had asked Ruki last year to be his valentine only to be turned down, a last valentines gift.
Be my valentine.
Be mine forever. Lie down in my cold arms and close your eyes to the painful world. Relax. Breath out and stop moving entirely.
Be my valentine.
Ruki rubbed his knee. Stupid stone, stupid path and stupid forest. Stupid slippery ground after this stupid wet rain. Stupid damp leaves coloring his white stupid suit trousers brown. Stupid soggy earth making his hands dirty. Stupid stupidly thin tree standing in his way, dropping stupid water all over him.
Stupid world. Stupid clouds raining down today. “FUCK!” he yelled at no one in particular.
Ruki was in a bad mood. Ruki had slipped.
Now he blamed the whole world.
Who else was there to blame?
For almost a month now, no one.
He was alone.
Nothing more than an empty shell struggling to find Tatsuro's old hiding place. Already Ruki was able to spot the tiny wooden observation platform, build for tourists on a ledge. If you leaned out of the big square holes, that replaced the top half of the wall, you could see the whole forest. It was a beautiful and silent place, since the tourists no longer came here, and it was long forgotten. Tatsuro had found it again and kept secret. Last year February 14th he had shared his secret with Ruki.
Last year's valentines day had been a complete disaster.
A sad smile came to Ruki's lips as he remembered, how he had turned Tatsuro down, how he had hurt him, still refusing to be in love with a man.
Stupid.
He half staggered, half slithered into the little hut and promptly bumped in the -for bigger people- waist-high wall separating him from an endless drop. “Stupid!” he muttered and stared through the glassless window at the sky. The clouds were clearing and the first sun beams were leaking out of the gray, causing light spots in the dark green canopy of leaves below. Perfect.
He climbed on the wall, desperately trying not to look down and clinging to one of the roof carrying pillars, and began to sing. The self-composed melody came to his mind easily, but his voice was hoarse, thinned by moisture, fear (it was a really long way down) and sorrow. He cleared his throat and started anew to sing the song for Tatsuro.
This time, his voice was strong and got louder and fuller with every note that left his lips.
The great mountains reflected his voices and created an enchanted atmosphere. Soon, the whole forest was singing Ruki's lovesong for Tatsuro.
And then the song ended and the echos died. Vanished.
Like Tatsuro.
Ruki listened to the silence for a moment, closed his eyes, leaned over the gaping nothingness and let go.
He felt the air rushing past hin.
And then...
Tatsuro...
Whispering...
Be my valentine, Ruki...
forever...
