Okay, so I need to stop reading the unedited liberalism before I end up flying into even more of a rage and hating George Bush even more than I already do.
Michael Moore tends to have that effect on me. :)
Yesterday was the sidewalk sale downtown, so Brian and I hung out down there for a couple of hours and went shopping. Brian still hadn't gotten me a birthday present (my birthday was April 30), so he bought me a copy of Stupid White Men by Michael Moore. I loooooove Michael Moore. I've loved this man since Christmas vacation when Ryan let me borrow his DVD of Bowling for Columbine. And if you hate George W. Bush, the NRA, or Da Man, I'd recommend watching any of his movies, or reading any of his books. However, if you like these things, I'd recommend staying as far away from them as possible.
I read about 165 pages of it last night within about a two-hour block, plus commercials during One Fine Day on ABC Family (sorry, Mike, but you're no match for a George Clooney movie...::swoon::), and I'd have to say it made me hate Republicans even more than I already do. Actually, it makes me hate all politicans, but I guess Democrats and Independents are the lesser of two evils.
The thing that bothers me most, other than the arguments Michael Moore raised about education in our country (which I 100% agree with), was the chapter on HOW George Bush stole the election. See, Moore doesn't just say that Bush stole the election, he proves it, just as he did in Fahrenheit 911. And the point he makes, is that if some guy had taken over the Number One elected office in the country in some little place in Latin America or Asia, the US would have sent troops into the country before you can name the Backstreet Boys. But because Dubya's family owns half of America, and because his daddy was President, and because he's rich, and because his daddy's friends are all on the Supreme Court, he got away with it. If this was Guatemala, he'd have been ousted from power already, and we'd all be singing "Hail to the Chief" for Al Gore, our rightful President.
Before George Bush was "elected" President, the nation was in prosperity, we had created a surplus of money in our budget for the first time in half a century, the unemployment rate was at an all-time low, conditions in the Middle East were improving (even Israelis and Palestinians were working toward peace). And now? Well, just turn on the news. The Dow Jones Industrial has dropped another 300 points in one day. Another car bomb has gone off on the West Bank, killing 12 people. Another company announced that up to 1500 layoffs are in the near future. The average American citizen reads only 99 hours per year. Only 11% of the adults in this country read a daily newspaper. Of 556 seniors at universities such as Harvard and Yale, only 60% could correctly identify the time period of the Civil War, while 99% of them could correctly identify Beavis and Butthead.
Do you truly think that we'd be in this state if Al Gore was our President?
If you're not convinced, listen to this: George Bush said during a speech that the United States and Japan have been allies for the past century. For the average American citizen, maybe that would be understandable. But don't you expect our President to know about World War II (especially when most of his family's fortune came from their business dealings with the Nazis during the 1940s)? OK, still not convinced he should know about one of the most important wars in history? How about the fact that Bush was a history major at Yale? Or that he also attended Harvard? He attended two Ivy League Universities, yet he doesn't seem to understand that we dropped two bombs on Japan in 1945.
What about the fact that he refers to Africa as a "nation", rather than a "continent"? Or the fact that he is quoted in saying, "We support NATO, we are part of NATO. We support Europe, we are part of Europe."? Or the fact that it's speculated that he cannot read past a 4th grade reading level? Or that he doesn't even read the briefings that he's given by his advisers? He's even asked that many of them be read to him.
And you want the future of our country in this man's hands?
