I attended the Independent Writers of Southern California's annual Literary Agent's Panel last night and learned, among other things, that the Endeavor has merged with William Morris. As the trilogy is being shopped by an Endeavor agent, we're wondering what that might mean for our project, but as of yet, we haven't heard anything. I think in this case, no news is good news.
Otherwise, the panel was pretty much been there, done that for me, only my experience has been in the agent/studio arena rather than the agent/publisher arena. The essentials are the same, but there are some details which are specific to the publishing world that aren't found in the entertainment industry. For all my writer friends, in case you aren't aware, trademark isn't a standard clause in a publishing contract, but when a story has series potential, many publishers will trademark the characters and the series name ... which pretty much ties an author into that publisher for the life of the series.
Interesting stuff, and I'm still processing much of it.
It'll probably trickle into another post in a day or so. I'm gearing up for my lunch meeting tomorrow, during which the viability and initial business plan for a small publishing concern are being discussed. It should be very interesting.
