My brain is whirling with backstory and I'm about to put fingers to the keyboard to rough out two scenes for the competition. Before I do, I want to send a thank you to Jason Isaacs. I don't know him, but over the weekend, I saw a lengthy interview with him which was most enlightening.
The backstory, which can remain hidden for the most part, informs the way the characters interact. Without the backstory, the congruity of their characterizations is in jeopardy, but with it, each actor or actress can nuance their performance to make the most of what lies beyond the stage, screen, or page.
And yet....
And yet, I love backstory. I love knowing who, what, when, why, and how often. I want to know what they think, feel, taste, smell and hear.
It seems to all come down, again, to balance.
Still.
Thanks Jason Isaacs for reminding me to shade dialogue with the portent of backstory.
