Under the Influence

One of my personal goals this year is a pro-active approach to life, which includes dental work. If any of you have genetically weak teeth like I have, then you'll know how difficult this decision has been; yet, I met my fate (a root canal) head-on: 7:30a.m. yesterday morning. ::pats self on the back::

When my dentist suggests that I'll need to take pain medication -- and gives me a script for 750mg. Vicodin -- I know he isn't kidding. He wasn't.

When the Novocain wore off yesterday morning, it was a good thing I'd already taken half a pill. I spent the rest of the day in a rather cozy -- if slightly woozy -- state . . . reading. I read Twilight at the urging of many of . . . well . . . you.

I have the second book, New Moon, sitting on the corner of my couch, waiting for me to begin, but first I have to address my kitchen. When three men (young or middle-aged, it doesn't seem to matter,) are left to their own devices about dinner, the results can be long-lasting. My three do try to clean up, but none seem to 'see' the mess they've left behind.

I'm still rambling. Damn. I was hoping the narcotic had mostly left my system by now. It seems not.

Sorry about that.

In any event, in the first couple of days of this year, I've read two books: Tithe (by Holly Black) and Twilight (by Stephenie Meyer.) I'll end up writing reviews of each a little later in the day -- or tomorrow -- when my head is clearer.

This is the first year I haven't read all the books I've given to teens, and I regretted it when I read Black's book. snarkywench_64, I shan't be sending the former to your younger daughter, after all.

In any event, I have posted my annual book list ... not having been terribly consistent with my last year's list, so I hope to manage it a bit better this year. I did, however, re-read the entire Potter series, which put me over thirty, but not by much. I've added a few books to my must-read list, and I have several others which I'll add (I've a few notes scattered about the house to transcribe.)

I'm in a quandary, though, about my non-fiction reading. I have a number of books which I've read, perused, and where I've scrawled notes in the margin; but I haven't read the entire book. I don't think I can really list it in the 'read books' list, but I'm not sure I shouldn't, as a number of them are books I'll return to time-and-time again.
