I liked that. Nice and enjoyable and feels very close to where it should be. I also enjoyed the question John asks at the end. Nice choice there.

Minor quibbles: You have some tense issues (using past and present tense from the Narrator voice within the same paragraph) and a couple points where you omitted a word. Nothing a good once over and edit won't fix.
