Today was such a great day! Do you ever have those days where for whatever reason, you wake up feeling wonderful and happy, and the rest of the day just keeps getting better? Well I had that kind of day today. I was busier than anything, but everything I did made me happy, so it was still good.
I woke up this morning in a really good mood...I don't know why, I'm definitely NOT a morning person...maybe because I got a good nights sleep for a change. Anyway, I had breakfast with Jacob and then went to Economics where I found out that I was one of 3 people in the class to get 105% on our quiz! My mood got even cheerier.
After Econ, I ate lunch in the dinning hall and went to work. Normal people don't consider work a good thing, but I really enjoy working the lunch shift. and today we got tons of packages that I had to check in...my favorite part of my job...so I had fun there too.
After work, I drove to Fairbanks Elementary School for my first day working at the after-school program that's held there. I was really nervous going into it, but I absolutely loved it! I'm disappointed that I can't go more often.
All of the kids in the program are "at-risk" students, which means that their families are very low income, and most of them have pretty severe behavior problems. But at the same time, they are all the sweetest children you've ever met. When you know what their home life is like, and then see how positive they remain, you can't help but want to reach out and do something for them.
The group that I work with is kindergarten, first, and second graders. They are divided into 3 groups by grade level, and rotate through 3 activities: tutoring/homework, recreation, and arts/crafts. I was placed in the tutoring/homework room, and helped the kindergarteners and first graders learn about the letter C. We practiced finding words that start with the letter C and then drew pictures of them.
One of the kindergarteners kept making me sit next to her so she could hold my hand, and one of the first graders made me a Valentine...I love little kids!
As soon as I was done at Fairbanks, I rushed home to wash my hair...there's a small lice problem among the kids...and then headed off to the sorority talent contest. All this week the AKL's are putting together a contest (Sorority Sweetheart Challenge)and all the sororities compete against eachother to win a party with AKL. Tonights events was the talent competition and Celebrity Look-Alike contest. So far Xi Om is in first place, so keep your fingers crossed for us!
After the contest, I got to hang out with Jake for a while. We just laid around and watched TV, and I told him about all the stuff I just wrote about.
Then, I had to go to the weekly Xi Om chapter meeting. We had tons of info to cover, and the meeting lasted till 11:00! But I'm home now, and very tired, so I'm going to sleep.
Sweet Dreams Everyone
