I've read some novels that has as many characters; Wheel of time, by Robert Jordan, for example. Though typically novrls stick to fewer characters. But the same is true for a lot of anime. The more characters, the less time for each and every one of them, obviously. I have concluded long ago that many characters and a lot of leeway makes for a good fandom. A character that's too well defined doesn't lend itself so well to fanfiction, though it may be more rewarding when watching/reading. What we want from our fanon characters, is a few good, preferably somewhat stand-offish traits and events in their past that we can build around. Colourful, but doesn't need to be nuanced - the fanfic writer can add the nuance. What we don't want is too many restrictions. Like canon pairings. Very limiting to the fanfic writer. It's why I don't really like to see any canon pairings, yaoi or het. Vibes are fine, but I prefer when it's nothing definite.

But a fic based on Ali's past? DO WANT!!!! Will you write it? XD
Mm, I agree with what you say about canon and fandom. Like "One Piece" manga, I love it to bits, but I've never felt an urge to write fanfics about it, since mostly everything is explained in so much detail. So I guess, on the other hand, as anime-only-viewers, stories with large character and/or plot holes can be a little disappointing. Lucky I discovered the joys of fan creations years ago ^o^
I don't mind canon pairings in romance stories, but in the more general stories, where lovelove is not the main point, I like it when the creators don't specify anything. I found "Code Geass" managed this well. Sure, they gave a hell of a lot of fanservice, but in the end, nothing was solidified. Which was good.

I... might be tempted into getting into Ali's past, but I don't have any good ideas for that right now. Might have to mull over it.
Heh, so the CG fandom has something to offer except naked girls? Imagine that. *s* Haven't seen it, but have heard a lot of bad stuff about it. Love has never been the focus point of Gundam animes, but I think that the creators have made efforts to draw in the female fans more in recent years, since they discovered that not just guys were into the Gundam shows. Some romance goes with the territory, I suppose, because while I may not be among those, the majority of female viewers do want it.

Hahaha! True, in CG, we do see quite a few of as-good-as-naked girls, but it's not all that bad. It's a series where I surprisingly didn't sympathise with any of the characters, and yet found myself enjoying it until the end. The story is good, and the irony/psychology (?) of no-one-is-the-ultimate-evil appealed to me.
I'm not in that majortiy either, it seems. In a kind of anime like 00, I don't need romance. Just deep, dark (if appropriate), interesting characters and a good plot is enough. And Lockon just about covered half of that criteria by the 2nd episode, so... XDDD
