94. She says things that she doesn’t mean
It’s just awesome seeing Elena slowly realize how she really feels about Damon. Blurting things out is just part of that process but it also shows me just how much she trusts him. She doesn’t feel the need to censor her reactions, and trusts their connection enough to be totally open.
95. When they fight they seem to be 12 years old
I enjoy their childlike behaviour as it takes me back to when I was younger and foolish. Plus, it’s cute that Elena can get a 170 year old vampire to act like a 12 year old.
96. They give each other nicknames
Like Scaredy Cat, Caveman, Grandma, Buffy, Xena ... I could almost do an entire post on this one simply because it is such a couple-y thing to do, IMO. Sure, Damon is the master of giving nicknames, but Elena is the only one that does it right back.
98. Because he’s either the best or the worst thing for her
This is another testament to how deep their connection is. As far as I’m concerned, the highs & lows are intrinsic to passionate relationships. There is no middle of the road when you love someone this much.
100. They both care too much and that’s the problem
Extreme emotions can cause problems in some situations, but I love that both of them share this. They are equal in many ways.
101. They were both faking most of it
Such a beautiful moment of truth between them, beneath layers of public performance. It’s wonderful how they both needed to show each other the reality, not content hiding behind the subterfuge.
102. He won’t let anyone hurt her
How anyone can not succumb to Damon’s never-failing protectiveness of Elena is completely beyond me. Yes, I do believe that Elena can look after herself, but there will always be a part of me that swoons at the notion of someone protecting me. Damon does this with such constancy, that I can forgive him for taking it to extremes and going against Elena’s wishes.
104. She broke the window to find him
I love how strongly Elena reacted to the Sheriff getting in her way. Elena’s stubborn streak is well known, but it was just fabulous to see it in action in defense of Damon. I got the impression that she wasn’t about to let anyone stop her from helping her ‘friend’.
105. She brings him peace
That is no mean feat for a person with as many issues as Damon. I’ve come to value peace a great deal lately, and believe that it takes a very special person to connect on a level where it’s possible to have that effect. Once again, I’m likely over-identifying with Damon, but the fact that Elena can bring him peace in the midst of a very difficult situation speaks volumes about how much he feels for her.
106. He reassures her
He willingly gives whatever he can when she’s feeling beyond hope. He’s what she holds on to when all the chips are down and she can’t see a way through.
108. He touches her, she catches fire
Well, DUH!! How could she do anything but???? Chemistry between them is the polar opposite of a problem. Keeping the flames under some kind of control .... THAT’s an issue.
109. In the worst moments, he makes her laugh
Having a sense of humor is one thing, but enticing a laugh when surrounded by problems is quite another. He brings joy to her life.
113. He would choose to do everything the same again, just to meet her
This is a true test of ‘realness’ to me. Realizing that past experiences make you who you are, and choosing to not change anything means that the person you’re doing that for is the one you’re meant to be with.
115. She changed her mind so he wouldn’t get hurt
She couldn’t follow through on her dangerous plan because Damon might have been hurt in the process. Yet another turning point in Elena’s slow discovery of her love for him. I also loved how he brought that out of her - fairly gently, but determined for her to start acknowledging how she feels.
116. Because he wouldn’t have done it for anyone else
Simply put, no-one has captured his heart like Elena has.
117. Because the drool meant she was dreaming about him
Such an adorable moment between them. Damon being his usual cocky self and Elena sub-consciously revealing her thoughts ... just delicious.
118. He can’t lose her and he won’t
There is nothing more horrible to him than the thought of her gone AND she wants to reassure him.
119. Because when it’s real you can’t walk away
So simple and true. I can’t think of any other way of conveying this previously unexpressed truth. It’s so hard to define what keeps one person returning to another but this comes the closest I’ve ever heard to doing just that.

No doubt impacted by their need to be together.

The ultimate test in my hopelessly romantic eyes. This only happens when two people completely in love are involved. There is no way to fake this and we’ve seen this exact thing on our screens on more than one occasion.
