5. Because he knew right away that she wasn’t Katherine
This says to me that it only took seconds for him to see into her very soul and realize that she was not Katherine. Their connection was a deep one right from the get-go. It was not just on the surface. Also, it tickles me that Stefan did months of research to make sure she wasn’t Katherine (because clearly he didn’t have the same depth of connection with Elena that Damon did).
7. She believes that everything Damon has done, he’s done for love
I love that as early as season 1, Elena had such good insights into Damon’s character. There was nothing phony about it, she just simply seemed to see things in him that he was trying to keep behind his facade. I also love that she wasn’t like everyone else in judging him solely on his actions; She looks at the motivations behind the actions as well.
9. He showed her the way to a vampire’s heart
His absolute determination to keep her alive, even if it means he’s exposing his own vulnerabilities, is one of the biggest factors in my obsession with DE. He truly does not care what it cost himself, he will protect Elena at all costs. That kind of consistent loyalty is a very big turn-on for me.
10. She hugs him
I love that she is the only one that does this, and that he allows to do it. She chooses the times carefully, but is determined that he won’t keep her at arm’s length when she feels he needs comforting.
12. They always worry about each other
Worrying says to me that they care what happens and it goes both ways. Elena may not say it aloud very often but she does worry about him.
14. Because she feels sorry for the heartbreak that Katherine caused him
Her empathy towards him came out very early on in their relationship. She genuinely felt bad for the hurt that he endured at Katherine’s hands. This was one of the first things that pleasantly surprised Damon.
15. He looks at her and everything disappears
This is a very big one for me. His face reveals so much of what he feels for her. I just adore that she is the only one he looks at that way. That oh-so-rare quality of having the world just disappear speaks volumes of how far gone he is for her. What I wouldn’t give to have someone look at me that way, even just once ...
16. Because he consumes her
Such a great, powerful word to describe his effect on her ... especially after waiting so long to hear her say it out loud. I think it’s wonderful that she feels that strongly but isn’t reckless about it.
17. He feels sorry for hurting her but she forgives him
His sincerity when he apologizes hits me harder because she’s the only one he’s ever apologized to. While he would never take back his actions, it was so important to him for her to know that he never wanted to cause her hurt. Even though she is forgiving in nature, I believe that his sincerity played a big part in how quickly she forgave him. This is just one of many ways that they bring out the best in each other, and that is not something to be taken lightly since it so rarely happens.
18. He kissed her first - She kissed him last
Besides their otherworldly chemistry, this one reminds me of Damon’s gentlemanly outlook in not ever pushing her too fast or too hard. He does it just enough to get her to be honest with herself, but never crosses the line of imposing himself on her. He’s endlessly patient with her, even when he doubts that she’ll ever truly reciprocate his feelings. It just made their moment in Denver, when she finally initiated kissing him just beautiful. There could be no question that she came to that of her own volition, she was not pressured or unduly influenced by him.
21. She stayed beside him, while he was dying
This touched me because she made him her top priority despite everything that was going on in her life at that time. Her conviction that she would not be anywhere else spoke to me of how important he had become to her. It was lovely to see that.
22. He saw her awaken, when she was dead.
The glimpse of Damon’s true feelings that we got in this moment, just struck me. How horrible it must have been for him to be beside her lifeless body. The significance that he was the one with her made this weighty, emotional moment dear to my heart.
23. She hates him and it’s the beginning of a love story.
A unique way of rephrasing the adage that the opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference. Hate and love both are passionate emotions and Damon/Elena are both passionate. To quote Mr. Joss Whedon:
Passion. It lies in all of us, sleeping, waiting, and though unwanted, unbidden,
it will stir. Open its jaws and howl.
It speaks to us, guides us. Passion rules us all and we obey. What other
choice do we have?
Passion is the source of our finest moments:
the joy of love
the clarity of hatred
and the ecstasy of grief.
It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion,
maybe we’d know some kind of peace but we would be hollow: empty rooms,
shuttered and dank.
Without passion, we’d be truly dead.
All of that certainly applies to Damon and Elena’s relationship. There is absolutely nothing indifferent about them, which is a big part of why I am so obsessed with this couple.
27. She is his humanity
Her nature draws his humanity to the surface after so many years buried deeply inside of him. It’s not something she consciously does, but rather the effect she has on him. It’s part of their whole bringing-the-best-out-in-each-other thing.
28. She was the reason he came back
Such a great insight from the Damon-came-first flashback!! When he said this to Stefan in season 1, I only thought of it in terms of Stefan. Now that my perspective has grown and changed, I completely understand that Damon knew this because that’s why he came back. There is a large part of me that believes that destiny was at work bringing Damon to Mystic Falls on the day Elena’s life changed forever. They were just meant to be together at that time.
31. Trust breeds trust. You have to give it to get it.
This is not something that comes easily to Damon and Elena is duly careful in handling it. Trust is a tricky thing between two people and lack of it can destroy otherwise strong relationships. Elena’s carefulness and kindness help Damon overcome his natural reluctance to trust anyone. His history has certainly taught him otherwise. While it has been there between them from the beginning, it has grown from tentative to solid and strong now. This is an excellent foundation for them.
34. Because she begged for Damon’s life
This was the episode when I truly began shipping DE. Their interaction on the road trip to Atlanta got the idea started but the emotional impact of Elena desperate to save Damon’s life was the clincher. It made it clear to me that she was already starting to fall for him (aided by her expression as she watched Damon and Bree kiss).
35. He would die before anything happened to her
Such is his protectiveness over his girl. There is nothing and no-one that he will back down from it the act of keeping her safe. He’s shown it time and again. Really, is there anything more romantic???
36. She knows she shouldn’t have hit him
The combination of the passionate response he brings out in her and her voicing her being sorry for her actions is captivating to me. We all do things that we don’t mean to, and the way these two trust each other with their feelings allows them to own up to those things without fear of judgement. I love that about them.
38. She wouldn’t know what to do if he wasn’t there
This moment was wonderful as it gave voice to just how much Elena had come to depend on Damon and was willing to express it to him. Feeling something is one thing but relaying those feelings to another is another thing all together. I felt that Damon needed to hear that just as much as she needed to tell him. Too often, Damon’s good deeds go unnoticed, and it gave more weight to the words because they came from her.
41. He praises her highly
Flattery is always nice to hear, but Damon’s style and manner makes me swoon. It’s his sincerity and consideration that get me. He doesn’t ever bestow it lightly, so it means more when he does. Her reaction on both occasions was sweet and lovely, as well.
42. If she stays, he stays too
There is simply nothing that he won’t do to support her when she needs it. Choosing to stay with her is one of countless little things that he does for her.
46. She decided that he was worth saving. He wanted to thank her for that
His recognition of her compassionate nature beautifully sums up their journey in season 1. I believe that Elena herself didn’t realize how much her feelings toward him had evolved (not that she got to hear him say these words ;). This moment was just so romantic and lovely and definitely brought Damon even closer to my fangirl heart.
48. He can’t forget he kissed her
His intensity following that kiss just blows me away. I felt so badly for him when it was revealed that it was Katherine and not Elena. He wasn’t going to let Elena deny that it happened only to have the rug pulled out from under him.
50. Because it’s right, just not right now
From Damon’s mouth to fangirls’ hearts everywhere!! This seemingly small distinction renewed my hope in DE getting the chance that I so desperately want them to have. I was so glad that she got to hear these words, that hopefully adjusted her perspective on what she’s feeling for him.
51. They make each other jealous
Jealousy can easily be overdone, but that is not the case with Damon & Elena. They only have this trait enough to show how much each other’s actions affect them. Even though Elena came up with the plan that had Damon flirting with Rebekah, she still didn’t like seeing it. That moment was a nice glimpse into her true feelings for him. Damon’s reaction to Elena kissing Stefan was understandable given that I believe that was part of her intent. It was her way of handling her anger towards him. He didn’t overreact, but certainly made it clear how it hurt him to watch her doing that.
53. Because it’s Elena ... Because it’s Damon
The way both of them have each other at the top of their priority list is truly romantic in my eyes. When the chips are down, there is nothing more important than helping each other, no matter what anyone else says or thinks. Damon’s sincerity was heartfelt when he uttered those 2 simple words. There was such weight in his delivery. *sigh*
54. Because she is his friend and he is her friend
Their friendship has not been an easy one, for sure, but it has grown solid on both sides. Allowing Elena to become his friend was a big step for him, and accepting Damon enough to be friends with him was a big step for Elena. They trust and confide in one another and give a different perspective on situations. This is a great foundation for their relationship.
56. Because he feels but he admits this only to her
She is the only one he’s comfortable enough with to let her in. She knows and appreciates that he trusts her that much. Their reciprocity in so many facets is just lovely.
57. Because he cannot stand the idea of her hating him forever
Such a touching moment while he waits for her to come back to him. He owns his mistakes but also fears this consequence the most since his love for her is so much a part of him. While his threat is abhorrent, the fact that it is born from his deep, abiding love of her never fails to tug at my heartstrings.
