MLS to PDX
We did it! The Portland City Council voted 3-2 in the past hour in favor of the proposal to renovate PGE park to be the new home of an MLS franchise in 2011. Now it's my understanding that we already won the bid and the league has just been waiting for us to guarantee the facilities, so it should only be a matter of time and paperwork before we officially get the team. Merritt Paulson, owner of the Portland Timbers (and the Beavers AAA baseball team) will be the owner of this franchise, so we shouldn't see much of a change from the Timbers we know and love.
The other part of this proposal is that the Beavers will be kicked out of PGE park and a new ballpark will be constructed for them. It's going to be located at the Rose Quarter, possibly replacing Memorial Coliseum. I'm not too sure what's going on with all of that, since it's really secondary to my real interest in this matter. If anyone out there knows any more about this, feel free to chime in.
