And here's another random update from me, since I have not a lot else to do. Tomorrow we're running all of Act 2 almost straight through. I'm looking forward to it, especially if we get to hear the soloists. Why should the chorus do all the work? Oh wait... that's what we're here for.
Anyway, I started to read a book by Madeline L'Engle called "A Circle of Quiet." It's non fiction and is her journal of a year, I think, at a place called Crosswicks. So far, the book is great. It's very relaxing to read and I may eventually need to buy my own copy so I can write in the margins.
In the first chapter, there's a quote that really made me happy, since I agree and it's a nice viewpoint to show. The quote is from a conversation between L'Engle and some other teachers about a child's self image.
L'Engle says " 'Do we want to give the child an image of himself - mirror vision? Or do we want it to be real?' That stopped us all. Nobody had thought very much before about the repercussions in the words: self-image: it's part of the jargon."
She goes on to talk about how self-image can be dangerous to people, pointing out that advertisers use this image to sell their products by preying on whatever weaknesses they can see. I think we need to be careful about this around children too. Telling children that they need to be this way or act that way, can leave some marks. I think though, that we need to keep in mind that children learn from being held to expectations and that this idea isn't permission for parents to totally ignore their child's behavior.
Okay, that was a little serious for live journal.. The book is good though, and since it's written in journalish form, it's easy to come back to.
Tomorrow I don't have to be in rehearsal until 1:30. Whatever will I do?
