Was reading Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (彼かの)on the train today.
It's so... CUTE!
I mean, I'm sure the story is really involving at points, but volume five just isn't one of them. The plot's idle, the theme is nonexistant, the characters are mildly interesting... and so on. It is simply adorable in some scenes though (Tsubasa is just the sweetest character), some of which were faintly humorous, but they were all so -ugh- shoujo and everything put in cute/mousy SD form that it wasn't really funny at all. Fake does so much better in this; the humor there is wry and, sure, hints at yaoi, but the play on words/chara is sly enough to be appreciated more... Fake was done by a woman too, by the way. :P
But back to Kare Kano. It's cute to the point that even the characters' problems seem trivial/cute; I mean, we'd all feel sorry for Yukino's dad being a loser or everybody's "sadness/lonliness" problems if they weren't so exaggerated and overdone with girly sympathizers and sentimentalizing details... Shoujo. *groans* Still, it was alright; there were some moody scenes and some brooding scenes... A very typical work. And Kazuma kicks ass. o.o
Anyway, I decided to include some of my favorite lines from it, just for cuteness' sake. *g*
Rika: *stomping* smoking is bad! smoking is bad! x3
Yukino: I get it... It's like in mythology. Rika is Goku the Immoral Priest [孫悟空]and Aya is like Sanzo [三蔵]...
Yukino: WHHAAAT? A story? In a book? The kind of book you can buy at a bookstore? You're an author?
Yukino: {Arima.
Friendship is a wonderful thing, but sometimes it causes...
...trouble.}
Yukino:No one could catch Arima's eye. I always wondered what made Tsubasa so special. Now I think it's because, somewhere in his heart, he realized... that they're the same.
They look good together... Really good...
but they also look sad for some reason.
All: (upon Tsubasa's father's entrance) WHAT A HANDSOME DAD!
Tsubasa's dad: Not long ago, my daughter ran into a stone wall on her skateboard. She got buried under the rubble and wasn't found until the next day.
Yukino's dad: It's almost like Die Hard.
Tsubasa: I hate men. They might be nice to you, but in the end, they always choose the other woman.
Yukino: Besides, daughters aren't the only things you can have. You can have three sons.
Yukino's dad: Hmm... Then I could have a baseball team.
And they're aren't any boy names that go along with Yukino, Tsukino, and Kano...
Yukino's mom: How about Riku, Kai, and Ku?
Tsukino: Or maybe Katsutoshi, Masayoshi, and Hideo!
Kano: Hey mom, if you have twins, you can name them Koichi and Tsuyoshi!
"If the twins are a boy and a girl, you should name them Ai and Akira!"
"Hana and Yume!" [Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is the name of a Japanese comic magazine, which translates into "Flowers and Dreams" *g*]
"Rojin and Kai!"
Tsubasa: {What... was that? Oh no! Maybe he just fell in love with me at first sight! The kind of person everyone likes.
Oh great! If they get married, we'll be living in the same house! What'll I do if he looks at me that way?
Didn't I see this kind of thing on TV once? And when the parents went out, things started happening!}
Yukino's dad: Who are you?
Asaba: I could ask you the same question.
*all lunge for Asaba*
Yukino's dad: Tsukino? Kano? Even Pero-Pero? [insert: he is the CUTEST]
Asaba: You girls have gotten even cuter since I last saw you. Srieously! You're like little fairies.
Yukino's dad: Damn you! What are you doing to my little angels?
Asaba: A man's jealousy is a scary thing.
*crack*
Arima: *on phone* Ow!
Yukino: What was that? Did you hit something?
Arima: No, I'm fine. I think I've hit my growth spurt. So my joints are cracking all the time.
Grandpa: Just look at you three! You've gotten even prettier since the last time I saw you! Like three little princesses!
Yukino's dad: Oh, I was just thinking about how much you look like your mom. Sometimes I feel like I'm looking at your mom when she was younger. Our friendship first turned into love when your mom was in 10th grade. The same grade as Yukino! That's why when I look at Yukino lately, I feel strange.
{Oh no!}
{Sunset.
The lights of the city.
The smell of dinner cooking.
The sound of TVs.
At that moment, the atmosphere seemed lonely...
... But at the same time, strangely comforting.
I felt this way a lot when I was a kid.
That's why times like this make me remember when I was a kid.
My grandfather...
Climbing trees a lot...
Friends...
Those days that are so far out of reach in the past...
I remember them all.}
Girls: Aaah! It's Hiro!
Woow! He's wearing a school uniform! He's in junior high!
Hiro: Don't I look good?
Girls: You look kind of strange.
Hiro: I'm different than I was before. I can't play with kids like you anymore.
Miyako: But you're so slow, Hiro! The girl next door to me gets to school a lot earlier than you.
Hiro: ?! AAAAAW! DAMN! I left the house at the same time I was used to leaving for elementary school! But junior high starts earlier! I-I-I-I'm really late! Well, you girls grow up to be fine ladies, even if I'm gone!
...btw, did any of you notice the characters are hardly ever drawn with noses??
It's long. :)
