This is why we have therapists! To help us understand ourselves, because I live with me every day and tend to lose perspective. Ask Dr. Jaffee!

I don't have the exact same problem, but it takes me ages to feel comfortable with people. I was in classes with the same 20 people for 2 years (4 semesters), and there are still only one or two that I consider actual friends, only 4-5 that I want to keep in touch with. I don't dislike them, I just don't feel friendish. I only have one friend in Australia (other than Mark), that being April (who is one of those unnaturally friendly sorts that are nice because they always call first :P). I like my classmates and I think I could be friends with them in time, but I don't have enough time, so it probably won't happen.

One approach you might use is asking yourself 'have I ever regretted signing on?' if yes, if sometimes they aren't nice or there's INTERWEB DRAMAS! or something, then don't feel compelled about it. If no, and you always have a good time, maybe realising you've never regretted it will help you overcome the anxiety about doing it. It's a technique I use when I'm feeling anxious or reticent about things I actually do enjoy.

One thing I should also point out... you are so amazingly nice and interesting. :) It's nigh on impossible to dislike you.
