Well clases have started. I'm excited but I'm worried as well. It's gonna be a lot of work for my Art for the Exceptional Student class and for senior portfolio.
Jim Long, the director of the photo program, decided in his last year of being director that he would grow a pair of juevos and dump money into the photo program. He came into my senior portfolio class and told us all of the new things like the replaced/fixed enlargers in the b&w darkroom, more scanners and computers for the photo students to use, digital color printers, interesting courses being offered next semester, etc. I was very happy that J Lo finally got his shit together....about 3 or 4 years in the making.
I have two grad students teaching my photo classes. I was worried that I would be stuck with Will May for Senior (I've heard his critiques are unnecessarily brutal), but we have Tom, who seems to be a cool guy with a lot of knowledge in multiple aspects of photography. Senior Port. is basically self-guided with few deadlines. We might not even meet every class. I have this other grad student (her name escapes me at this moment) teaching Seminar of Historical Photographs. I thought Heroy was going to teach this class. The very thought made me cringe. I thought that it would be Ansel Adams and Edward Weston up the wazoo. The course name is actually more of a contemporary photography class. Any photographs from the 1960s to the 80s will be reference tools but not necessarily focal points in this course. I am very relieved. It's not like we shouldn't know and respect the Masters of Photography, but we can't deny that there are many photographers today that we are overlooking because high school teachers and professors want to keep us in a perpetual time warp.
Art for the Exceptional Student will be intense. Fun, but intense. We made thumb creatures in class! One of our texts is a children's novel called Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key, a book about a boy with ADHD. We unfortunately have a service-learning project to do, which will eat up my time that I could use for my photo series.
Speaking of my photo series, I hope that my sculpture artists will be prepared this weekend. A majority of my series will be digitally altered, which will take a lot of time. The sooner we have the pieces ready, the sooner I can photograph and get this show on the road. I'm tired of waiting. Though I might need to have my lens checked out. I don't know if they are sharp enough in focus.
And before I forget,
here are the photos from Rewind's show in late July. And the Synthetic Nightmare photos on August 5th are
here.
Yesterday was the last Sacrosanct at the Nanci Raygun. It was a band night. Synthetic Nightmare was the headliner. Though the place was hot as balls, it was a blast. Tons of people came out. I won't miss the lack of air conditioning. And that girl who seems to dump all of her problems onto me. I call her Chatty Cathy, but I think her name is Christina. I will miss going to a place that is close-by to my apartment so I can pre-game and not drive drunk. I'm sure Sacro will continue on elsewhere, but it will be time before that happens. I will have photos from the last Sacro soon.
On Friday, I got to meet Lamb of God. No...not Jesus...Fucking metal, baby! I'll post an entry about my meet and greet when I post the photos.
Got myself a new pair of jeans. I know. Most of you are thinking, "Okay, who cares? You got a new pair of jeans." My dilemma is that I can't find a pair of jeans that I like. Everything is call distressed, acid-wash, pre-faded crap that would cost more than it looks. My solution to this dilemma: go with a brand name and stick with it. Thank you DKNY for being my best friend, helping me find a pair of jeans that are dark blue with front and back pockets, slightly low-rise and cute.
Got some posters as well for the apartment--a 11x14 Nightmare Before Christmas poster and a giant Sin City poster. Both of them are movie theater style posters with some credits on the bottom of the print. Yeah for the poster fair!
Thanks for reading. Coming up in future entries:
- an icon post displaying all of my nerdiness for "Bleach"
- the epic battle of the silverfish
- actual photographs from my series (okay, wishful thinking, but maybe if you all are good)
