“Charge!”
“For Pioneer!”
The sound of hurried footsteps beating against sand echoed dully around rocky outcrop as two young looking girls shot into view. On any other world they may very well have simply been kids having fun but for these girls the stakes were a little higher. Ahead of them on the sand were a number of yellow bird-like creatures with beaks that looked like mining drills. The hopped to their feet and turned as the girls approached.
“Ready Raine?” asked the first girl, her purple ponytails bobbing behind her as she ran.
“Always ready Roxy, I’ll draw them, you pick them off,” replied the second as she let a grin cross her face.
With that the first girl stopped and the second kept on running. She swung her right hand to the side and there was a burst of energy as a purple coloured rifle appeared in her hand. Swinging her second hand up to meet it she took aim and fired. A flurry of yellow needle like projectiles shot from the end of the gun striking several of the birds and causing them to flinch.
A moment later the air seemed to heat up as a large fireball shot in from Raine’s side and struck one of the birds sending it flying onto its back where it collapsed. Raine took a brief glance over her shoulder to see Roxy readying a second foie spell.
Some distance off two more girls stood watching the antics unfold. One looked about the same age as them and the other at least ten years older. The older girl looked a tad bored, leaning idly on a huge Chain Sawd which was nearly as big as her. She had dark skin and was obviously a newearl from the pointy ear that stuck up between her bright crimson hair. The second girl was human, dressed in a long purple forces robe. On her head sat a large hat with two tassels that bobbed back and forth as she breathed.
“Why do you let them do that?” asked the force, “You never know what dangers are lurking around this crater.”
“Oh relax Lavender,” replied the second, “Chill out and have some fun!”
“Sorry can’t do that Tifa, you always have enough fun for the pair of us.”
“Pfft! You sound like my mother, all this nagging is turning your hair grey.”
“It’s my natural colour thank you!”
Lavender huffed and checked her grip on her staff, its full length easily twice her height. She looked back at the two girls. Roxanna and Raine, quite a playful pair. They had only just become Hunters and seemed to be enjoying their new life. They had promise too, Raine showing signs of being a good RAmarl ranger and Roxy being a budding newearl force.
“You know...” mused Lavender, “...if they get in trouble you aren’t going to be able to get over to them in time...especially if you’re going to be carrying that giant compensation with you.”
Tifa pulled an unamused face and hoisted the giant weapon over her shoulder.
“Bah, say what you like, I like my accessories to be big, bold and preferable loud!”
As if on cue the sword in her hand gave a small grumble as the internal motor revved a little.
“Besides,” she continued, “If they are that close to trouble they were in trouble before they even got close enough to be in trouble from the trouble that they wouldn’t have been in trouble with if they hadn’t been close enough to be in trouble.”
Lavender blinked and looked up at her companion. For a moment she seemed to be trying to work out what Tifa had just said. Finally she gave up.
“...Tifa...”
“Yeah?”
“Shut up and follow me.”
With a sigh Lavender hoisted her staff into the air and set off at a slow pace into the crater towards the girls, who were now jumping around the unconscious Rappies they had defeated. Tifa smirked and matched her pace. As much as neither of them wanted to admit it, they had fun together.
