Ya know what? I didn't have to make that speech to my parents after all!
A prenote before I continue; I have the following grades:
A in Engineering Concepts and Methods
F in Composition I
F in Calculus I
B in Strategies for College Success
B in Fundamentals of Oral Communication (a.k.a. Speech class)
Semester GPA: 1.571
Academic Standing: Disqualified
So here's what happened:
I presented my grades to my mother and father (first my mother since my father was out shopping n' stuff) and they weren't surprised. It turns out they got a letter from UCF on Friday last week saying that I was academically disqualified. I guess they didn't want to tell me right away either because they feared it would ruin my good day or because they were waiting for me to present to them the grades myself. I'm thinking the latter, naturally.
Well I talked it over with my mother, about how I got the F's and possible reasons as to why I keep screwing up each year. You know what? When I brought up the idea of me getting a job during the summer, she was actually okay with it! Then I asked her why she was suddenly okay with it, seeing that before they were afraid of me getting a job before because they feared I would get too used to the comfort of having a job and just forget about college (to put it in a nutshell). Her reasons for me to get a job seemed to override their previous fears.
We also talked about my Strong Interest Inventory test, which I took after visiting the Career Resource Center. We also talked about my Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator, which collaberates a bit with my Stong Interest Inventory to narrow down my majors even more. Dad came back in the middle of the SII review, so after that he joined in, starting with the review of the MBTI.
(Note: If I get enough comments asking what these tests are, I'll post the explanation in the next entry. But if I get only a few, I'll still tell each curious individual by IM or something.)
It turns out that I have a strong leaning towards Psychology, Accounting, and Music. Now music, I could make a small-time side job out of. Accounting is looking pretty cool because it deals with math and numbers, which I'm very good at, and it deals with organization of data, which I like to do. Psycholoy has a good amount of reasons to it. One, because it involves the study of the human mind, and that's always an interesting thing because it means a study of everyone else and ourselves. Two, because I seem to have a sort of psychology-working mind with the way I analyze things and the way I tend to see emotions behind what people say. My mother even backed me up on this because she saw how I have a sort of psychology knack. Three, because I can get a job as the type of Psychologist where I can help people with their personal problems, and I enjoy helping people and bringing joy back in their lives. (^_^)
Well we also talked about my future, why it's not really necessary to move out of the house as soon as I can when I'm 18 and live life on my own, which we both had the same stance on. (Trust me folks, I can give somewhat of a lecture on this if you dare oppose me on this issue. Mwahahahaaa.) We talked from like 5:00 to 8:30. It was a very good, long, deep and serious talk about things. And that's the type of talks I like having with my parents. (^_^)
Well that's it! So yeah, I never had to give that speech at all, hehehe. They both were all good with me getting a job.
Later!
