Hello, fellow language lovers.I have lurked the linguaphiles community for quite some time and must say that I am continually excited to read entries from students in many parts of the world who are learning different languages. I also want to inquire about your language-learning experiences, but I'll first share my own.
I was born and raised in the United States, a (sadly) monolingual country in comparison to where many of you have been raised. However, I do speak conversational Spanish and additionally, lived in South Korea for a year, where I taught ESL and also *tried hard* to learn Korean. :p Living in South Korea where English is not spoken much outside of academia and the expat community did two big things for me: 1) made me realize that English-speakers are catered to by the rest of the world and 2)gave me a tremendous amount of respect for those who strive to learn a language so different from their own.
So, to get the ball rolling, I'll just say that so far, Spanish is my favorite (non native) language and Korean is the most difficult language I've tried to learn! The next language I would like to try learning is French. I want to learn French because I would like to work with a charity that helps developing countries (many of which are French-speaking African countries).
