"Derpy"-insult ?

I have a question : Among the fans of the cartoon show "My little pony" started an argument about a pony named "Derpy" , some people said that "derp" or "derpy" was an insulting and discriminating US-American word against people with disabilities

Derpy is a derivation of herp-derp. It is slang I see a lot on the internet.

I don't know the full etymology of it, but yes, I have heard that it comes from someone making an insulting immitation of people with mental disabilities.

Yup, reminded me of when we had "Duh" in the 80s, although no one considered that a direct insult to mentally handicapped people -- it was more in line with general ditziness or what is now sometimes called "a brain fart"; a.k.a. a bimbo.

"Derp" & "Duh" can be used as an insult, but usually are used playfully to make light of another or one's self. We all have our moments, and seeing others make mistakes can be a relief! Wether she goes by the original "Ditzy Doo" name, or the fan-dedicated "Derpy", I do enjoy the character and not for any negative reasons. :)

It's my understanding also, however, that there is a South Park (television show) connection. as clarified by di_glossia below.

I watched some scenes online, but didn't find it insulting; the pony was just a bit clumsy, but I never thought it was disabled.
