"Illiteracy"

Oct 12, 2009 22:23

I'm working on a project for my design studio course on reading, and have decided to focus on the idea of being illiterate when you go abroad. The project's still coming together (but is due in ~2 weeks), and I'm still sorting stuff out, so I may have a few general queries for you all.

First up, though, how do you say "illiterate" or "illiteracy" in whatever languages you all know? And are there any interesting etymological roots behind those definitions? (Kind of a side point...it's probably not relevant to my work but it's still cool to know.)

Thanks so much. :) I'm actually hoping to make this as undefined as possible--I don't want to anchor it to any specific place, so as to make the viewer (it'll be a motion piece) experience it, no matter what languages s/he speaks--so hopefully I won't have too many more queries for you, but this community is just such a great repository of knowledge.
