Doctoral Degrees in Linguistics

So I've been reading a lot about PhD Degrees in Humanities (Specifically anything French related), and the overwhelming consensus from professors and articles have been similar to this article: " Graduate School in the Humanities: Just Don't Go". I'm looking into MA TESOL programs right now. Would you say that your experience would apply to that too? I'm not saying that to sound defensive - I would genuinely like your opinion about whether you think I'd be making a mistake.

Thanks. I've been teaching English at the university level for four years in Vietnam and Colombia, and non-uni level in Japan. I'm fairly confident I'm making the right career choice as I've already been doing it. But my long-term goal is to teach ESL at the uni-level in the US, and I'm not so sure how competitive those jobs are for Masters-holders. Thanks for your input.
