In that case, I seriously doubt that there is an equivalent term in Japanese. I remember my hostfamily discussing some transgender person we saw on the TV and them all concluding that there really was no "good" word to describe what s/he was. I'm not sure if they were all derogatory or just inaccurate, but yeah. They may not have been up on the current queer vocabulary, though, so maybe there is a word.
I'm just going to keep calling you on this... I'm sorry...happymrlocustAugust 31 2007, 21:01:48 UTC
"hermaphrodite"
You realise that hermaphrodite is primarily used as a biological term for an organism which may be fulfilling the reproductive role of the male or female at any given time?
Even if you could apply the term to humans, you'd still be slightly wrong because it directly relates to reproductive organs. Breasts aren't reproductive organs.
I knew the porn industry tolerates a great many things, racism and violence being some... but I didn't know they also advocated the gross misuse of words as well.

I haven't got the slightest clue as to what else you could have meant but that leex is in the porn industry and, as such, was representing its advocacy of the gross misuse of words when you wrote:
"I knew the porn industry tolerates a great many things, racism and violence being some... but I didn't know they also advocated the gross misuse of words as well."
So maybe you could help me out with that misinterpretation by sharing how that doesn't imply that you thought she's a sex worker.
The point that lead to this, and this was a while ago, said that it was used in the porn industry.
I didn't say "You tolerate a great many things ...", but I did say the porn industry does.
For some reason by saying "You agree with what the porn industry says, and you use it as a reason why it's fine. I don't think the porn industry has a particularly shining record with regards to quite a few things, gender identity being one." I'm also saying "You are in the porn industry" without typing it.
If I wanted to imply that leex was a sex worker (which, for the record, I didn't and I still don't), I would have just said "You obviously must be in porn to be using it this way".

Actually, the term hermaphrodite, like any word or usage, can equally apply to humans (perhaps not so much in its technical sense) as any other creature. The context simlpy implies that it's not "true" hermaphroditism. To call it a "gross misuse of words" is to display a rather astounding (for someone in a community called linguaphiles) level of ignorance about the way words are used, and how meanings become standardised and altered.
