Middle English help

Hey,

I've been trying to memorise the grammatical patterns for Middle English strong verbs for quite a while now, but still find myself having problems when it comes to grouping verbs into their classes. E.g., when I see "he was yrisen" in a text, I'll remember that with an "i" in the PP, it's probably class I, but for a word such as "chese", how am I to know that it's cl. II (chesen, chese, chusen, ychosen) and not cl. VII (chesen, chese, chese, ychesen)? Of course, I could take a look at the meaning, which in this case would be easy, but there's a lot of verbs where I can't just apply that rule.

I'd be very grateful for any kind of pointers, this is really driving me nuts. Thanks in advance!

[Edit] I'll mostly be looking at Chaucer's English, in case that helps.
