The ultrainteresting topic of declining nouns
Hello! I've been a member of this wonderful community for ages and under three different usernames but have never before posted an entry. So, an introduction: I am a secondary school student, native Icelandic speaker, speak English decently and Danish disappointingly, and am a student of German, Japanese, Latin and Spanish.
Right. In school we Icelanders are taught a certain formula to decline Icelandic nouns, which then becomes firmly set into our subconscious. Like this, using köttur, cat:
nom. hér er (here is) köttur
acc. um (about) kött
dat. frá (from) ketti
gen. til (to) kattar
Students of Icelandic, do you learn this, or something different?
And, do other inflected languages have this kind of set declining formulas?
