Eh, well I am still at my job after 1 year. I completely hate it. I have a shit ton of cash coming my way in bonuses if I stay another year. While I am not employed by Google I am on the campus of Google. After a year, I have been able to influence the marketing giant on how to be better at a few things they do. My angst is with my current company. I work for slave drivers. People who are not supportive in helping me achieve contractual obligations as a vendor but achieving goals by any means necessary. My boss's boss has advised me just today that "... I don't care how you to meet the goal, its up to you how you get there. Its not my job to help you in anyway..."
Simply put it, its a autocratic corporation bent on results and not understanding, and no that is not the way most companies operate. I'm not sure if it is the culture of the company considering that its headquartered in India, and all of the chief bosses are in or from India too. The lack of respect towards subordinates is excessive, and without provocation. This alone was enough to make me want to leave now, but stupid me didn't take the other jobs I had lined up.
Back in August of 2013 I had another job lined up that paid slightly more but it was an hour drive 1 way. In December of 2013 I had yet another opportunity to leave. My current employer threw a giant $$ number at me and I didn't leave because it resolved a lot of financial short comings I have now. I stayed purely because of the money. Now I think this is a lesson learned that there is no price on happiness in the workplace.
I can admit that the job location isn't the only hostile environment currently. Michigan's winter has been unforgiving this year. Endless snow storms, and gray overcasts days continue to lengthen. While longer days might seem to be a step in the right direction towards spring and then summer; temperatures continue to stay well below freezing and often below zero. We had a heat wave the other week and the thermometer got up to a whopping 34 degrees. In a festive parade of social behavior, every michigander crawled out of their domiciles to all possible shopping centers, restaurants, cinemas, and any other place(s) that takes money. It was a complete nightmare. Every where I went was loaded with people!
oh well. Here is my winter prediction for Michigan. Its gunna be COLD, GRAY, SNOWY, and last until May! Let's keep sippin' the whiskey until we pass out.
