Meinu Yufenpai -- Shanghai Calendar Art

Jan 19, 2006 21:31

"Meinu Yufenpai ("Beautiful Woman Calendar") is a term given to a form of advertising art which flourished in China in the 1920's and 1930's. This art form, centered in Shanghai, produced hundreds of striking images of "modern" Chinese women on poster-sized calendars. These calendars were used to advertise popular products of the day -- most notably cigarettes and beauty products, but a wide variety of other products ranging from insecticides to batteries got into the act. Once considered eminently disposable, they are today highly prized by collectors, and good quality originals of the most sought-after images now fetch upwards of $1,000 (USD)."
