I finished with school last Thursday, enjoyed a somewhat abbreviated long weekend, and then went straight into work on Monday of this week. Needless to say I've had some anime and manga keeping me mostly sane for a good part of the quarter (especially during finals), which I'll sum up quickly here because I ought to be asleep already.
- Death Note. I heard good things about both the manga and the dubbed anime. What drew me in was the amazing nearly photorealistic manga art. What kept me in it was L, and then Near. (For the record, I didn't cheer for Light once.) The anime might not be as good as the manga, but I haven't seen much of it yet. The dub for this anime is phenomenal. It not only didn't make me cringe, it was *good.* L's voice actor deserves extra love.
- Bleach. The steady. Latest colorspread = Kubo you perv. Flashback arc in the manga = win. Filler arc in the anime = so-so, but still good for filler. Jump Anime Tour comedy short = please be "Bleach on the Beach"! And please, Shiro Sagisu, release OST III soon!
- Gintama. Rumbel released their sub for the Benizakura Arc recently. Still as smolderingly intense as the first day I watched it, and Rumbel subbed it speedily and well too.
- Persona Trinity Soul. Man, this series is quite the wannabe-Eva. First it started out looking like it'd be about high school life and high-octane Persona battles, and then it went into mindf*ck territory, and now it's going headlong into tragedy. The body count is something you wouldn't believe, a stark contrast to its muted tone and calm pace. If Bleach is all bark and no bite, this is its antithesis - a silent stab in the gut, basically. Two more eps left in which to kill off more characters get some resolution.
- Suzumiya Haruhi season 1. I watched it a while back because I like comedy, but I don't like lawless characters who walk all over everybody because they think they're God (or, well, are God). Gin-san from Gintama is guilty of that every so often, but thankfully he gets his comeuppance pretty soon after. Haruhi, on the other hand, gets away with everything, and poor Kyon has to pay, which makes me ticked because Kyon's my favorite. Love for Yuki's quiet badassery, and pity for the long-suffering Mikuru too. Just no love for Haruhi, even if she can really rock out.
- Code Geass season 1. Heard good things about it, plus it swept the Anime Grand Prix, so picked it up. Really must disagree with the claim of "Death Note but with mechas." Lelouch, as ruthless as he can be, has more heart and conscience than Light or even L and Near did (let's leave poor Mello out of this). That kind of crappy stereotyping is almost as bad as "Saiunkoku is like Fushigi Yuugi!" >.< Anyway, this series deserves something better than a five-second blurb... which will have to come later.
- Hakushaku to Yosei (upcoming). No, I'm not a shojo sort of girl, and honestly the story doesn't seem that interesting ... but
the voice cast! It's like a dream seiyuu roll for me - Midorikawa Hikaru, Sugita Tomokazu, and Koyasu Takehito all in one series. *_* I might just watch it to listen to their lovely voices.
