I realize that this is more than a month away, but it could be pretty important, so I want to make sure you have it on your calendars.
On Wednesday, June 11, from 6 p.m. to 7:30, there will be a workshop at CubeSpace called Legal Issues for Non-Married Couples. This will address issues of:
- Medical guardianship;
- Custody issues;
- Property rights; and
- Passing on of assets.
It does cost money: $30/couple or $20/individual. It's being run by a lawyer that people close to me know and trust.
This workshop has a lot of personal weight in it for me -- my boss set it up specifically for me & J and the three other not-legally-married couples at CubeSpace, in response to me running around asking each of them for advice and learning that they'd "always meant to do that stuff." I really love my boss, and I love that she saw this problem, knew she could help fix it, and then actually did it.
The group of us from my work who are attending are all very different, so it should already be a good mix. There's me & J; my coworker and her s.o, who've been together for about 8 years, own a condo, and aren't anticipating children anytime soon; Sam & Fawn, who are expecting a baby at the end of the summer; and Kate & Janet, who have a three-year-old, have been together for a very long time, and who have been through several serious medical experiences already (you may have heard me talk about the three-year-old with a brain tumor; that's theirs).
If you and your sweetie(s?) or if someone you know could use this, please send 'em on. The more, the merrier.
