Notes: I spent a while thinking about how I wanted to remix this. I had a few

1. Mirrorverse: It's amazing how you so quickly establish that this is mirrorverse. In the first couple sentences, it could just be the regular 'verse, but then - cadet deaths during a training exercise makes you go huh? and then the agony booth, and you go OH! Very well done. I love, though, that even though it's the mirrorverse, the trust and connection between them is the same. Bones still has a sense for Kirk, still knows where to find him and how to heal him. THAT is what makes mirrorverse fics compelling to me - when everything all around is evil, maybe even the main characters themselves, but the bond between them is still something pure and sacred. Oh, my heart.
When Bones' reaction to Kirk's tears is fear - oh, bb, perfect. Naturally, no one can see Kirk vulnerable and live - well, no one except Bones. And Bones calling Jim on his motivation for rescuing Pike? And Jim's hand ghosting over the dagger in response - like an involuntary tic when someone gets a little too close to the truth about him, omgomg.
Holy schmoly, that salute. And the NECK BARING OMG. Hottest thing EVAR, and it's not even overtly sexual. And I love how on the surface, Jim is so nonchalant about accepting Bones' declaration, but how he reassures him he's not intending to "dispose" of him and then - how he looks away while Bones masters his relief! Oh DUDE. Poor McCoy, caught in a world where showing emotion is a weakness. Thank god he's got Jim to protect him. And thank god Jim's got Bones to patch him up.
No matter what the world, those two need each other, and you show that amazingly well in amazingly few words.
Oh, and the theme of hands being extended to each other that you play with throughout the fic - I love how you start it here, so formal and ritualized, and no actual physical contact involved, and yet still so laden with meaning. Seriously, bb, you are an awesome writer.
