Inspired by some photos
Pira posted a while ago, and finally turned into a feasible project by some internet research on Nipponese historical costumes sites...
Mostly, I needed an excuse to use my new liners - they're waterproof like the others I used up to now, but they come in different colours, which allows me to have outlines on the watercolour paper that won't stand out as starkly as the black Indian ink. It was a new experience, and I really like the look of the light sepia lines in the pale face...
I also enjoyed playing around with all those lovely, bright reds and yellows I have in my watercolour paintbox but rarely get to use. Maybe this is a step towards working without inked outlines and finding a style that looks less like a children's colouring book. We'll see...
