Today I made the grave mistake of reading the chapters I wrote four years ago. Oh God. I've come so much farther in my head in terms of plot, characters, and structure, and if I dare say so myself, I think my writing style has improved. With, you know, college and all.
That being said, I'm going to write a little something fictional before I start my homework (which entails 150 pages of comparative historical sociology canon and 5 pages of response from me).
Is this procrastination? Discuss.
This is probably comprehensible to those of you who have read/heard what I've written so far. Ever.
By the end of high school, I had written a prologue and five chapters. Last year, during NaNoWriMo, I began to completely rework the plot, characters, and setting. My main goals have been to make Crivea/Vazikyan a more culturally original setting, to introduce more minor characters, to make the plot more simple and profound, and to make my protagonist more like an actual human being.
I got to the point where Marcellus gets Qivrel. Between the end of high school and now, I've planned revisions or rewrites of almost every scene, especially those near the beginning, with the changes I've made to the society and the characters in mind. For instance, Marcellus's motivations have changed a little now that I've finally worked out Crivean kinship--he's saving money to buy back his family's ancestral lodge, which is one reason he hasn't bought any slaves and one very important stake he has in following along with his job. Developing the race hierarchy of occupied Vazikyan has added depth to Qivrel and Nenyen's characters, and fleshing out the history of Crivea is turning Jedren from a cardboard villain motivated by spontaneous sadism to an understandable (but still loathe-able) agent.
In short, I'm enjoying it more and more.
Rereading what I wrote once upon a time made me very grateful to everyone who encouraged me and told me they enjoyed what I had back when it sucked. For all of you, I promise to write this story the very best way I can, to thank you for all your patience and support. I will make it unique and I will make it memorable, and I will make sure it's everything you loved about the old story and more.
