I'm disappointed...

As most of you should know, I'm now attending Eastern Washington University in Cheney, WA. The obvious differences between a state school and a private Christian I expected, but this is really dumb...

Next week my dorm is sponsoring "Sex Bingo". This includes unlimited free condoms and over $200 in sexy prizes like the Kama Sutra and Carman Electra's strip workout tape, among other things. I think it's to promote safe sex, which is good, but at the same time I think that this sort of thing is really telling the student body in our dorm that "You're going to have lots of sex in these four years so you might as well learn how to do it right." Also I wonder if the people who made this assume that the kids here are having promiscuous sex every weekend...

I'm disappointed.

There are other things that I've noticed that are a little unsettling. Now that the kids are away from home they can swear freely without a slap on the wrist. Several times a day I hear loud, vulgar phrases, from guys who think it's funny. Our room is right across from the men's bathroom so we hear everything. Our wing has already been repremanded for vandalism and theft. (Not that the whole wing is responsible, just 2-4 guys.)

In the EWU newspaper, a reporter asked why freshman were excited to be here. One girl said "To go drinking and partying". She can't be older than 19 years old. She can drink and party at home just as much as here, so why should she waste $11,000 per year if that's her goal?

There are lots of signs around campus that inform us on date rape, which is a huge deal here! They gave all of us girls rape whistles too.

All I can think about is all the young people here who are making terrible life decisions, and unfortunately being raped can happen easier when you're drunk or high... I would never wish that on anybody, nor do I think that those who live that type of life should be sexually assaulted, but don't you think that being in that environment is dangerous in so many ways?

I suppose I'm preaching to the choir, but this is what's been on my heart lately.

Let me know how you feel about what I wrote.

Lindy
