So it may not seem very relevant to some people, but last week a tree fell down in Davis.
The Tree.
If you have lived in Davis for any amount of time, you know which one I mean. If you haven't been through Davis, then you will have no idea what the fuss is all about. The one in the middle of the field that looked like it should have fallen down 30 years ago? Well, it finally fell down. A good tribute to it is written
Here by Bev Sykes. I have been reading her journal for a while, at first out of fascination for the woman who raised a significant portion of
Lawsuit but ultimately because she is a good writer who writes daily amusing things.I recently let her know that I was reading her journal and she reminiced with me about my father's sets for Davice COmic Opera Company, and other shared Davis memories. She surprised me when she asked if she was correct in remembering that my mother had passed away in the 80s of cancer. Turns out that she had driven my future step-mother to and from San Francisco in order to help out our family during the tough last years. I had no idea.
Anyway, so the damned tree. I would say that I was surprised about how sad it makes me, but really I am not. It was part of my childhood, and like just about everybody that passed it by, I had several pictures of it. It just had personality. It was tough and tenacious. Yeah, trees die all the time, but this tree was supposed to last forever. Apparently it made the front page of both the Davis Enterprise and the Sacramento Bee. As it should.
Fellow Davisites, sorry to bring you the sad news. We all mourn together. Non-davisites, please give an extra long hug to your favorite Davisite today... they will probably need it.
