Some days I need a chinstrap on my hat
To keep my chin from falling down
Because I try to keep my head up so high
When my nose drags on the ground.
And I tried to so hard
To look you in the eyes and mean
I had no expectations
But everyone has hope,
Or maybe that’s just me.
Shy is just a lie you tell to keep me at your heels-
Craving the attention but avoiding the commitment,
Loving every word I wish you’d say,
Coming in too close, touching at the tips of our noses
But not until later, ok?
Whisper once that you mean it-
You know I’m so young I’ll believe you
But I swear this time I know I shot my chance.
So at night I tuck me in too tight,
Shut my eyes and close my mind;
I'll hush myself to sleep.
The crash is near and the wasps have followed me home,
Stinging what I leave exposed-
Dry skin and messy curls, an anxious ear next to the phone.
