Charlotte Ronson Urban Outfitters interview (various Samantha mentions)

Not sure if this would be considered off-topic? If so, let me know and I'll delete it. I've bolded the Sam mentions...

Tell us about how this collaboration came about.
I've been selling my main line to Urban for a few seasons now and it has always done very well. Urban approached me about doing a secondary line with them and normally I wouldn't have agreed but I feel that we have built up Charlotte Ronson and separated it from what the C. Ronson line was. Also, Urban has done a great job with their branding and design in its own collections that I thought they would be a great platform to launch with.

How does it differ from your main line?
Well, first of all, it differs pricewise. We are able to create high quality pieces at a lower price point and make them more accessible to a larger number of people. My line has also become more sophisticated and so it was fun to be able to bring in more of the C. Ronson elements with Play by C.Ronson.

How did you come up with Play for the name of this line? And would you describe your overall aesthetic as playful?
My sister, Samantha, always creates mix cds that we hand out at my runway shows and she created one called Play a couple of seasons ago. When it came time to come up with the name it fit perfectly with what we were trying to do. My collections are always playful and fun so we decided to go with it.

Who is the quintessential Play girl?
The Play girl and the Urban girl are very similar. She is edgy but still wants to be on trend. She isn't afraid to take risks and she likes to mix and match.

Who or what is the biggest influence on your work?
Its always different. It can be a movie or a piece of art. Sometimes even a song.

What's on your iPod right now? And is this something your siblings have a strong influence over?
Right now I'm listening to a lot of Adele (my brother Mark produced a couple of songs of hers). Also Coldplay. My brother Chris Jones is working on some things that sound great and I'm obsessed with Connie Talbott!

I normally give Samantha my ipod and she puts all new music on it. I actually think its time for her to put new stuff on!

What are your favorite things to do in New York when you're not working?
I like to shop, go to the movies, and walk around the city.

And what's your favorite indulgence?
Massages.

What has been the highlight of your summer?
Practicing driving. I'm finally getting close to getting my license!

Describe what you are wearing today...
I'm almost always wearing something I've designed mixed with designers I love or vintage finds.

Which other designers do you admire?
Jane Mayle, Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga, Christopher Kane, Christophe Decarnin for Balmain, Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy, Alexander Wang, Current/Elliot denim.

Do you have a muse or someone who you feel really embodies your brand?
My sisters Samantha and Annabelle are always inspiring to my collection. I think there are pieces in the collection that they both look great in.

Have you always wanted to be a designer? And if you weren't a fashion designer, what would you be doing?
I have always wanted to design clothes since I was little. If I weren't a designer I would be doing something with children. I love kids.

Your collections are very well received in Japan, how much does the Japanese culture influence your work, if at all?
I love the aesthetic in Japan, everything is very detailed oriented and cute. I have always been obsessed with stickers, bright colors, and little cute figurines.

What advice would you give to aspiring young fashion designers?
You really have to make sure that it is your passion and that you are willing to work extremely hard to make it happen.

And what was the best piece of advice you were given when starting out?
My mom told me to find something I loved. I always loved fashion and went for it. My brother Mark always wanted to make music and he never settled and did something else so I was able to see that anything was possible.

What are you currently working on?
Currently I am deep in preparations for my SS09 collection for Charlotte Ronson as well as PLAY by C.Ronson.

What's next for the Charlotte Ronson brand?
We are working on accessories, swimwear, and a few other surprises to launch soon.

What do your family think of your designs?
We are all very proud of each other and very supportive. They do all they can to support me!
