Baby's Named a Bad Bad Thing

Meg, you know I love ya, babe, but that one site you link? Baby's Named A Bad, Bad Thing? It drives me fucking insane. Whoever wrote it is not generally a hell of a lot smarter than the potential parents he/she mocks. For instance:

Chenaur - She can grow up into a half-man, half-bull who roams the labirynth!Right. Because it's not like it sounds ( Read more... )

irritating, non-personal, rants, websites

Personally, I do think that naming your kid after a product is kind of lame. :P I would definitely double-take if I met a "Pepsi Johnson" on the street.

And foreign names aren't bad... But if they don't match the last name at all, it looks and sounds weird. Also, these people have a tendency to take foreign words and assume they become names (Allegra is a good example, and also hits up that product line issue :P).

I will agree that the author is occasionally a moron, though. :P

My point is more that if you give a kid a real name and there happens to be a product with the same name, then you're being a dick if you make fun of the parents, not a clever, witty person. Beaufort is, I think, a real and reasonable name, despite being French, and you can stick a lot of Europeanish names together and it won't be too weird, despite not matching. Makes sense, even, since a lot of peresons of European heritage in North America are euromutts. Unless the parent had the alcohol in mind or only knows of the name because of it (or, alternatively, there's no fricking way they should be able to hear the name without thinking of the product, like overadvertised Pepsi or Coke), it's not really an overtly stupid or lame naming decision. If, on the other hand, you see some well known product on the shelf and say, "Hey, that word looks kind of like a name. Cool!", then yes, that's a bit... off-putting ( ... )

*LOL* But that's a last name, not a first ;)

A lot of the product ones I've seen have been shit like "Dasani" and "Evian", stuff that I don't think have ever been names and just make me wonder if bottled water has become that integral to daily life.

Beaufort is weird because it's oldfashioned-sounding ;)

Old-fashioned, but a perfectly good name. Rar!
