From my understanding, the text of the Florida law in question is:

He or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony.

I know, rly! I was listening to a discussion of this case on our local NPR station and was agog at the idea that a statute like this permits someone to claim self-defense in questionable circumstances and have police and prosecutors say "sorry, it's out of our hands because of the statute." Investigate the facts and send it to a grand jury, ffs.

I think part of the meme is that, according to the person I heard speak about it (a national editor for Atlantic Magazine), police and prosecutors in Florida predicted exactly this result when they opposed the no-retreat legislation.

BTW, from what I hear, a grand jury (presumably a state grand jury) is being empaneled.
