I'm not actually dead!
I finished remix, am stuck on the special forces fic.
I'm kind of obsessed with
Memrise right now. It's hard to explain- basically it's a site that helps you learn things. It's designed for language vocabulary but really it could be any list of facts/items you need to remember. You can choose from a bunch of different user-created "courses" or make your own. It teaches you new words in batches of five, giving you examples of "mems," which can be mnemonics, sound-alikes, pictures, videos. For example, the Spanish verb quedar means "remain"- my mem for that is a a hillbilly saying "stay thar." IDEK, it works, okay? My mem for la llegada (arrival) is Lady Gaga arriving at an awards ceremony (it's a particular picture).
The site also makes learning a tamagotchi/neopets-like game. Each course is a garden; each word/fact is a seed; you grow them by practicing with little quizzes (there's a combination of multiple choice and typing); you then harvest them to your long-term memory, where you periodically water them by reviewing. There's some community features but that seems to be a weak point of the site right now. Still, if you want to add me as a mempal,
here's my profile. And here's
a course I'm developing for myself with criminal justice-related vocabulary.
In other news, I have a mouse. My cats have been overly attentive to the fridge and stove areas for the past week, and I thought something was up but saw no evidence. Tonight I heard squeaking, so I cleared off all the junk I had piled on the stove, and sure enough a mouse had been happily pooping away in my kitchen. As you can gather from this (even if you haven't seen my kitchen), I really don't cook. Like, ever. I have reported the mouse to the management office because I don't know how they prefer to handle these things, but given that it is an apartment building I figured they would want to know, in case there are other meeses living in the building. I mean, I assume this one didn't teleport here.
I got up to get a drink about 20 minutes ago and I saw it. It is a little grey mouse. I don't have problems with mice, generally speaking. My main objection to house meeses is that they gnaw into your packaged goods and shit all over the place. So it will have to go. I kind of hope the apartment management people will have someone deal with it- not because I am afraid of mice, but I hate killing things. I don't even really like killing bugs, and mice are fuzzy and cute, and presumably they would make noises while you were killing them, and...eurgh. Anyway, I e-mailed them, so we'll see what they say.
I didn't sleep much last night, I can't understand why I'm not asleep right now.
