You've no idea how thrilled and agitated (almost in a good way) I was to see that name scroll past on my Friends page. You may also never know how lucky you were to have the wisdom to get out early. In my defense, the "fee" really was something of a "donation" in the beginning, but as the years progressed it became a requirement. Only several anti-fan-clubs got the admin to change the file name from "donate" to "register" since it was required.
It's a small world that you should happen upon this shitheap of a mud that I played.
But one good thing, as I said - I met my current Swedish beau through that game all those years ago, and if we've nothing else in common, it's the learned mistake of having played that game.

But yeah...I guess in a way it's good that the registration help files are hidden (not on the website and not available to you until you finish char creation) and so rigid and backwards. The overtones of deceit, entitlement, and arrogance were writ large for me to see, and it was obvious to me that this was NOT a happy place to be.
I'm going to submit a character for Armageddon, another long-running, well-respected, rp-required mud. It also happens to be completely free...and the materials about the world available on the website are frankly astonishing. I think I am honor-bound to try a mud whose webpage includes such cultural heritage as a variant of chess with completely unique rules and its OWN variants, plus songs including a drinking tune about three whores comparing the size of their...nether assets.
