2011 fic wrap-up post

This year I wrote and posted:
Since most of my fics are long, rambling WIP things, I'll do answer this by number of words posted in 2011: 147 109, spread out over 7 series fics and one-shots.

Overall Thoughts

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Probably more, in that my intention at the beginning of 2011 was to finish up my remaining WIPs and then focus on original fiction. Then True Grit and Downton Abbey happened, so. Oops.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Mattie/LaBoeuf in True Grit.

What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
A Long Time Travelling Away From Home. It's one of the few things I've written that turned out exactly as I wanted it. It's the closest I've ever come to actual good writing.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
The only risky thing I did this year was take a chance on writing historical fiction. I'm glad I did, because I've found that it's a really comfortable and fun genre for me to write in, and I actually (gasp!) like what comes of it.

From my past year of writing, what was....

My best story of this year
A Long Time Travelling Away From Home.

My most popular story of this year:
It's so hard to gauge popularity, even with hit counters, because it's hard to know how big a fandom is, and how many people read the pairing you're writing. Also, how do you compare the hits/comments a long fic in a tiny fandom gets compared to a one-shot in a larger fandom, you know? All that said, I think it's probably either Come With Me, Go Places or With No Lodestar In Sight.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Actually, this year I got a lot of really wonderful kudos and positive feedback on the things I was most proud of. There's nothing I wrote this year that I felt was under-appreciated. If it didn't get much attention, it didn't deserve tons, tbh.

Most fun story to write:
With No Lodestar In Sight has been such a challenge and a pleasure to write that I'm absolutely putting off finishing off the very last chapter just because I don't want it to be over.

Story with the single sexiest moment:
I wrote almost nothing sexy this year. The closest thing to sexy I've written this year is the awkward first time scene in Let The Dust Settle In, or possibly some of the UST moments in With No Lodestar In Sight. Though I hesitate to call anything Mattie and LaBoeuf get up to "sexy." More like painfully repressed.

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
I was pretty tame this year. The wrongest I got was likely some of the bits in With No Lodestar In Sight between Mattie and the villain, and those were more creepy than outright wrong. Unless you count shipping Mattie/LaBoeuf wrong, which you may well do. But I am working on something terribly, terribly wrong right now, so who knows what wonders 2012 will bring?

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
Let The Dust Settle In, which is maybe why I am having the most ridiculously hard time continuing it, and may in fact never actually finish it? Ughhhhhhhhh.

Hardest story to write:
See above, re: ridiculously hard time. Double ughhhhhhhh. I don't even know.

Biggest Disappointment:
Loving Texas did not turn out as I had hoped, namely because it was poorly paced and plotted, and I rushed through getting it finished because it was way, way late. Meh.

Biggest Surprise:
With No Lodestar In Sight took me completely by surprise. After reading True Grit and seeing the movie, I had a major itch to write what amounted to fix-it fic for Mattie/LaBoeuf. I did that with A Long Time Travelling Away From Home, and I thought that would put the whole thing to rest and I could go back to finishing up my WIPs and working on my novel. Then an idea planted itself, and before I knew it, I had this big, ridiculous multi-chapter thing on my hands. I still don't know.

Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
Hm, I really don't know. Meaning I haven't yet picked up on where I'm giving myself away. :o

Fic-writing goals for 2011:
Same as last year, really. Finish up WIPs, move my focus from fic to original fiction. Since I keep getting obsessed with new fandoms, I'm not sure how likely I am to accomplish this. Guess we'll see.
