Same-sex marriage.

Same-sex marriage is about to become legal in Canada.

Not someday, not in the future, now. Right now. Within the next several days.

During the previous election, this issue came up often, including during the debates. And it was the candidate who opposed same-sex marriage that was slammed again and again by his opponents for his views.

I'm sure that most people who read my journal don't have much knowledge about how the Canadian Parlimentary system works. I can't claim to understand it myself to be honest, which is one of the thousands of reasons I need the AH around.

They're about to go for summer break. There was danger that due to stalling tactics [yeah, my opinion, but still] the Conservative Party was going to be successful in putting this vote off until they came back into session in the fall.

They voted to stay in session. To put off going home to their families and staying to complete the job they started.

The part I really love? The Bloc Quebecois, one of the larger parties within the Canadian government [we're not like the USA, we've got anywhere from 4-5 major parties at any one time] are the party who has stood up and really taken a stand to get this pushed through and passed now- asking for a written guarantee to have a vote on the same-sex marriage bill (which they received) in return for their yes vote to stay and extend the session. This party is centred in Quebec, which is a province with a very strong religious and Catholic presence.

The Bloc agreed to back the vote after the Liberals promised them that same-sex legislation will be dealt with before the session ends.

"It is our duty: We will extend," said Bloc House leader Michel Gauthier on Thursday before the vote.

"It is worthwhile extending the sitting to offer justice to our fellow citizens and put an end to this issue that is divisive."

Bill C-38, the same-sex marriage bill, is expected to pass easily. Although all Conservatives and around three dozen Liberal backbenchers are against the bill, the Bloc and the NDP overwhelmingly support it.

The Conservative Party isn't going to be able to stop it. The USA isn't going to be able to stop it. And the religious bigots who've been protesting it aren't going to be able to stop it. Same-sex marriage is coming to a Canada near you.

Now.
