I was at work, just back from lunch, at 12:30. At 12:30m my mother in law called and said that Grandma wasn't doing well... that she could rally, or it could be a day or two. I thought about finishing the day at work, and going up after, but something in her voice told me to go right then.
She died about forty minutes after I got to the care home where she lives. I was holding her hand, telling her who was in the room, and telling her that it was okay. She was done. She was allowed to go.
I've never been in the room when someone died before. Never watched it happen.
I've known her since I was fifteen years old, and started dating the Academic Husband. I've been been calling her Grandma since I was sixteen. I've known her for over half my life.
The Academic Husband is away. I convinced him, yesterday, to go on a trip to visit his friends. She was fine then... playing scrabble and complaining about her hair. This morning, she wouldn't wake up, and she never did. He got to talk to her on the phone, and she responded a little when she heard his voice.
I'm really tired right now. So, so tired.
