For a couple of years now, since I first heard about the tradition of toasting The Professor on his birthday, I have been meaning to participate. I have also, in recent months, been meaning to actually post in this journal for a change! Tonight I do both.
At 9 pm EST (last night, now) I opened a tiny bottle of Bailey's and whispered (discretion is useful with a spouse who is *not* a LotR fan!) my toast to the universe. "To The Professor...thank you."
My own toast was a simple one, but earlier I found a website where people were invited to post their plans for their own toast/celebrations. There are some lovely comments, and some interesting :-) choices of libation.

http://tolkiensociety.org/toast/2011/list.php -- list of toasts; there were 14 pages earlier today and now it's up to 41...
One of my favorite comments in these Tolkien Society pages:
"Like the Minstrel of Gondor, you have wounded us with sweet words, Professor, and we are forever grateful. I will join others in 'lighting the beacons' -- lighting a candle at the time of the toast, letting the beacons sweep around the world as each new time zone toasts you!"
Next year I'll definitely be adding the candle.
Our dear Professor...
To The Professor!
