Matt and I went to visit Mom. When we arrived at her room, we could see a woman attired in business dress was sitting and talking to her. Her back was to the door and we couldn't hear her, but it seemed likely that this was the hospice person. I went in to introduce myself and saw it was an old friend of mine from chorus -- Susan Morris! I haven't seen her for awhile and forgot she worked for a hospice -- but even if I remembered, I wouldn't have expected her to be an hour outside of Ventura. She was just as shocked to see me as I was to see her.
Mom seems to be making a recovery of sorts. She's eating and talking, although her words are even more garbled than they were before. We were soon joined by other family, including my niece, Liz, and her 3-week-old daughter. Mom's face lit up when she saw the baby. It was the most animated I have seen her in months. After a while she said, very clearly, "Everyone, go!" We left and she went to sleep.
I can't believe her resilience. I think if I took her in my car and drove off a cliff, I'd be dead, the car would be totalled, Mom would have broken every bone in her body, but she'd still be alive. We may have to behead her.
