BLACKOUT!!!
It wasn't my fault, honestly!!!
Ok, so I'm in Iowa, going to school at little Cornell College, happy home of 1,120 some odd students, not to mention faculty. We're in Mount Vernon, Iowa... and we just survived a blackout. I thought it was fun! I love the dark, so I was perfectly at home in the small, pithc black corridors of my dorm. I was restless when the lights first went out, so I was pacing up and down the hall, creeping all my friends out. Unintentionally, I assure you, but they were freaked anyway, so it wasn't hard to scare them. We all congregated in my room, candles lit (which were allowed because nothing else was working) trying to entertain ourselves without creeping everyone out. I offered to tell them about how mummies were made, but they politely declined the invitation. Actually a resounding "NO!!!" would probably be a more apt description of their reaction to my offer. I had fun.
We got power back yesterday afternoon, but didn't think it was here to stay. Now that the Internet is back up and going, we are fairly certain we are well and truly out of the dark.
The reason for this blackout was downed powerlines due to large amounts of ice coating the lines. My first ever ice storm. We don't get ice storms in Colorado, so I was quite amazed by the ice storm here. I don't think everyone was as amazed or amused as I was.
OH! A couple of our friends, Neb and Chris, decided to try to freak us out. They got all bundled up in dark clothes (and Chris was wearing a ski mask, which I had to admit made me a bit uncomfortable) and came over here Saturday night. They prank pushed my "Don't Worry" button which plays the song "Don't Worry" and hid in some doorways a little ways down the hall. Me, being me, had to go find them. Without a flashlight. I heard them, found them and was deciding how to tell them I could see them when they jumped out at me trying to scare me. I think they were rather disappointed that I didn't squeal and scream like they wanted.
But the girls talking about burglars and what if someone decides to burgle us, and a couple of strange guys (people we've yet to see on our floor) coming along asking us if we knew if so and so was ok, was amusing to me. How is someone going to burgle us in the dark? We can't even see where we're going! I got a major kick out of Laura asking one guy, "Are you a burglar?" He gave us his credentials... at least as far as college students are concerned: "I'm Casey, I'm a senior, I'm majoring in this, I belong to this group, I came to check on Kim, is she ok? Now, can I borrow someone's flashlight?" I was highly amused by all of this.
Anyway... it was an interesting weekend, to be sure. I didn't want the power to come back on, but even I can't argue with the large number of emails that needed answering in my in-box, nor the fact that a lot of the kids had projects due that needed not only computers, but the internet as well. Half of me is disappointed in the fact that it isn't dark anymore, but the other half is relieved that no one's freaking out anymore.
Oh, and I had to drop my Stats class. My grade was so far in the gutter, I was afraid that if I let my GPA fall any more, then I wouldn't get out of the hole in time for graduation. I can take it again or another math class next year. Nothing was making sense, though, so... if I had stayed in, there would have been some very bad consequences. I'm ok with all this, though. Now that I'm not flipping out over the class, I've got other things to work on, like my prospectus for my Bachelor of Special Studies and the forms for the internships I'm hoping to get... ie, an Anasazi dig in Arizona for the summer and a course in Egypt next spring semester. Fingers are crossed!!!
Well, I'd better go work...
Sorry this was so long, but at least it wasn't a depressed rant!!!
Smiles all! Love ya!
