Mixed Heritage

“I pulled the surveillance footage,” Commander Magnum tells his daughter.
She frowns. “Um … okay?”
He pushes a button. Grainy images appear: jittery, indistinct, surreal as amateur CGI. Falling men, splintering wood, focused mayhem. The central figure, head shrouded in a scarf, moves too quickly for recognition, then abruptly vanishes.
He rewinds, freezes the frame just before the blurred figure makes entry. In one corner, an irregular splotch shows in a mirror. “I remember that bleach stain on your jeans. Is there something you’d like to tell me, Lily Catherine?”
She sighs. “Well, Dad, the world is older than you know …”
