i just got home from my senior symposium presentation... the symposium is a day long event where seniors completing independent studies present their work in 15-minute lectures/q&a sessions.
I've been working so hard on my thesis and on this presentation while also being terrified that only 5 people would show up. i also had to condense a year-long, 90-page thesis into a ten minute talk- haha.
But it went better than i could have rationally ever thought it would. I was grouped with 5 other girls presenting their projects in a rather small room. i was last. for each girl's talk, more or less people would filter in, some presentations had just a few people and some had quite a few. I listened to their talks, again, some interesting topics and some well-researched and presented ones, some both, some neither.
when it was finally my turn to present i got up to see that the room was more crammed full than it had been all day- all the seats full, the ledges in front of the windows, and tons of people crowded onto the floor. I was insanely nervous as i read what seemed like a ludicrously simplistic version of my work, fumbling a few times with a totally dried mouth.
the applause when i was done was amazing, and after fielding some questions, people crowded around to talk and say how much they enjoyed it. one lady i didnt know was crazily enthusiastic, saying how happy she was and how amazing the presentation was- i was just like, um thanks so much for coming, i'm glad... i was so glad to see so many friends, co-workers, and aquaintences, etc. come out, and my wonderful advisor robin ran up to me and gave me a gigantic bear hug- anyone who knows robin knows she looks like a robin: shes tiny, delicate and adorable, and her rushing up to give me a crushing hug was so amazing... she also loved my outfit :) hehheh
i am psyched to celebrate this and to do the back-breaking amount of work i have to do to finish the thesis, but this was i guess exactly what the organizers want it to be:an acknowledgment o four work and a chance to share it with interested people...
